Strategic Shift From Traditional Endorsement to Ownership

Former Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli has officially made his debut on the professional networking platform LinkedIn. The 37-year-old athlete published a detailed inaugural address outlining his long-term ambition to transform India’s domestic sports business into a globally competitive ecosystem.

Kohli’s entry into professional networking coincides with a significant pivot in his commercial strategy. Choosing equity partnership over traditional endorsement arrangements, Kohli reportedly turned down an estimated ₹300 crore extension offer from sportswear brand Puma over an eight-year period. Instead, he invested ₹40 crore for a 1.94% stake in Bengaluru-based Agilitas Sports, while stepping up as a co-founder and co-creator of one8world.

Building an Integrated Domestic Sports Framework

In his inaugural post, Kohli emphasized the necessity of constructing a fully integrated, end-to-end sports ecosystem originating from India. His vision encompasses design, manufacturing, consumer retail, and distribution networks capable of outlasting individual athletic careers.

"I've always wanted to see an India where every sport is followed, celebrated, and played," Kohli stated in his opening publication. "The vision of building an end-to-end sports platform from India, spanning manufacturing, consumer brands, and sports distribution... It's time to build something that will outlive all of us."

Founded in 2023 by former Puma India leadership including Abhishek Ganguly, Agilitas Sports seeks to unify supply-chain manufacturing with front-end consumer presence. The acquisition and expansion of one8world within the Agilitas fold reflects an effort to scale domestic athletic merchandise to international standards.

Market Impact and Broader Economic Context

Kohli’s transition highlights a broader trend among high-profile athletes migrating from traditional royalty-based sponsorship models toward venture investments and brand co-ownership. Industry analysts note that direct equity stakes allow sports figures to build enduring wealth while directly influencing product direction and corporate governance.

His debut profile on LinkedIn lists his roles as a professional athlete with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), alongside his corporate roles as an investor with Agilitas Sports and co-founder of one8world. The post garnered extensive engagement across the platform within hours of publication, signaling growing interest in the intersection of Indian sports talent and corporate venture capital.
