The United States military launched "powerful" strikes on Iran on Thursday in retaliation for Tehran's attacks targeting US bases in West Asia.

In a post on social media, the US Central Command said it had completed a “heavy wave of strikes against Iran” following yesterday’s attempted missile attacks on American forces.

CENTCOM, in a statement, said its assets struck dozens of IRGC targets in Iran, including “military command centres, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defence sites, and maritime capabilities.”

It further said the strikes aimed to further diminish the threats posed by Iran and its proxies to American forces, commercial shipping, and neighboring Gulf countries.

These were the first strikes after a nearly week-long lull in fighting had dashed hopes of a return to negotiations.

CENTCOM added that more than 50,000 US service members currently deployed to the region “remain highly vigilant, focused, lethal, and ready.”
