US-Iran Ceasefire Agreement to be Public Soon

Details of the interim agreement between the U.S. and Iran to end the West Asia conflict emerged on June 16, with both sides presenting it as a step towards a broader peace settlement.

The Memorandum of Understanding, signed this week and expected to be made public soon, extends the fragile ceasefire first announced in April by another 60 days, creating space for negotiations on a permanent truce.

Under the agreement, the U.S. will lift its blockade of Iranian ports, while Iran will restore the movement of oil tankers and commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Donald Trump said that the deal ensures that Tehran will not acquire nuclear weapons and added that the Strait of Hormuz would fully reopen on June 19, when the agreement is expected to be formally signed in Switzerland.

Iran reiterated that its nuclear programme is intended solely for peaceful purposes. The deal also allows Iran to resume oil and fuel exports immediately, supported by banking, transport and insurance services.

Despite the breakthrough, significant challenges remain. Israel, which was not directly involved in the negotiations, has distanced itself from the agreement. Ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah continue to complicate efforts toward a lasting settlement. U.S. and Iranian officials nevertheless expressed hope that the accord could eventually lead to sanctions relief, economic recovery and a permanent peace agreement.
