The United States has approved the sale of five Seahawk maritime helicopters to New Zealand in a deal worth 1.5 billion dollars. The approval comes as New Zealand has pledged to nearly double its military spending.

In a statement, the U.S. Department said it had made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of New Zealand for MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopters and related equipment.

Under President Donald Trump, the United States has been urging allies in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region to increase defence spending. New Zealand, a close ally of neighbouring Australia, has been expanding its deployments across East Asia in support of Western militaries and their partners amid China's rapid military rise.
