The Union Cabinet today approved the 'GOBARdhan' scheme with a total provision of Rs 23,731 crore; it is a national 'circular bio-energy' initiative. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said in New Delhi that the scheme will generate 1.5 lakh jobs. 'Gobardhan' scheme is a significant milestone in India's clean energy journey. The scheme aims to increase rural income and national economic value by converting agricultural residues, animal dung, sugarcane waste, urban organic waste and other bio-resources, which are abundant in the country, into clean fuel and organic fertilizer.

The scheme will be implemented from 2026-27 to 2035-36. This will make compressed biogas a key pillar of India's future energy mix. The scheme aims to increase domestic compressed biogas production by nearly tenfold, attract large-scale private investment and promote a circular bio-economy across the country.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs also approved the construction of a four-lane highway of over 135 km on National Highway-15 in Assam; this highway will connect Baihata Chariali (near Guwahati) to Tezpur. The total cost of the project is expected to be over Rs 8,970 crore.

The project includes provision of emergency landing facility on Tezpur Bypass and construction of five major bypasses with a total length of over 58 km. The project is expected to reduce travel time by half and also reduce vehicle operating costs.
