Trump to impose new tariffs on 60 trading partners

The Trump administration will impose new tariffs on 60 trading partners over forced labour concerns, replacing a global duty introduced by President Donald Trump earlier this year.

The new levies will take effect on Friday and range from 10 per cent to 12.5 per cent. They will affect major economies, including the UK, China, the European Union, Canada, Japan and India.

Under Thursday's announcement, countries that have implemented a forced labour import prohibition or committed to doing so will face the lower tariff rate of 10 per cent. These include Argentina, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United Kingdom.

China, Japan, South Korea and several other countries will face the higher 12.5 per cent tariff.

However, the European Union, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Switzerland will receive some relief, in line with trade agreements they had previously reached with the United States.

Goods already subject to sector-specific tariffs, such as steel and aluminium, will not be affected. Certain energy products and fertilizers will also be be exempt, along with goods covered under the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement.
