A tourist aircraft crashed on Saturday while flying over Peru’s ancient Nazca Lines archaeological site, killing all 13 people aboard.

The Cessna Caravan C-208 aircraft, operated by Peruvian airline Aerodiana, had taken off from Pisco Airport for a sightseeing flight over the UNESCO World Heritage site before crashing in the Socos area, around 6 kilometres from Nazca city and 19 kilometres from the Nazca Lines.

Police said the victims included 11 passengers and two crew members. The crash occurred a day after tourist flights over the area resumed following a suspension caused by strong winds.

Reports said the passengers included seven Italians, two Germans and two Spaniards. The cause of the crash is under investigation, while rescue teams responded at the site.
