The Central Government has further strengthened the legal and regulatory framework to combat the threats posed by AI-based deepfakes and synthetic audio, video and text. To ensure a safe, reliable and accountable cyberspace for users, the Government has enacted various provisions under the 'Information Technology Act, 2000', 'Indian Judicial Code, 2023' and 'Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Rules, 2021'.

On February 10, 2026, the government amended the ‘IT Rules’ to impose stricter rules on deepfakes and other AI-generated content, including clear labeling, searchable metadata, platform liability, and time frame for complaint redressal. Under the new provisions, the deadline for removing illegal AI-generated content has been reduced from 36 hours to 3 hours, and the time taken to redress complaints in sensitive cases has also been reduced.

Thirteen 'Responsible AI' projects focusing on deepfake detection have been approved under the 'IndiaAI Mission'. These include 'Sakshya' (a project by IIT Jodhpur and IIT Madras), 'AI Analyst' and Real-time Voice Deepfake Detection System (a project by IIT Kharagpur).

To create awareness about cyber security, 6,650 workshops have been organized across the country under the 'Information Security Education and Awareness' (ISEA) project, which has benefited more than 11.37 lakh people. In addition, guidelines and awareness materials on Deepfakes and cyber security are regularly issued by 'CERT-In'.
