Following the formation of the new government in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has begun taking stringent measures. On Tuesday, he issued orders to officials to shut down 717 liquor shops across the state.

All these shops fall within a 500-meter radius of places of worship, educational institutions, and bus stands. The Chief Minister has directed that these shops be closed down within the next two weeks. According to the state government, the 'Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation' (TASMAC) currently operates 4,765 liquor shops throughout Tamil Nadu.

Acting on the Chief Minister's directives, officials conducted a special survey across the state. The primary objective of this inspection was to identify shops operating in close proximity to places of worship, schools, colleges, and bus terminals.

During this survey, officials discovered that 276 liquor shops were situated near places of worship. Additionally, 186 shops were found near schools and colleges, while 255 shops were located in the immediate vicinity of bus stands. Consequently, a total of 717 shops have been identified for closure. The public had long been expressing concerns regarding the presence of liquor shops near public and sensitive areas.
