The Ministry of Health has issued a new notification tightening regulations regarding the sale of medicinal syrups. Under the new guidelines, specific categories of syrups can no longer be sold without a valid doctor's prescription.

The Ministry has made it mandatory for all medical shops and chemists to verify the doctor's prescription before dispensing the medicine. Patients will only be able to purchase the quantity of medicine specified in the prescription. Additionally, vendors are required to maintain detailed records of every sale.

Special inspection teams will be set up to monitor the implementation of these rules. The government has clarified that strict action—extending up to the cancellation of the license—will be taken against medical shops that violate these regulations.

The Ministry of Health has urged citizens not to use medicines without medical advice and has warned that legal action will be taken against those who violate the rules.

Why was it necessary to tighten regulations on syrups?

The primary reason for imposing stricter restrictions on the sale of syrups is their increasing misuse. According to health officials, certain types of syrups were being used for intoxication rather than for medicinal purposes; this trend, particularly among the youth, had become a cause for concern.

The government decided to take stringent measures after receiving reports from several states regarding the misuse and illegal sale of these syrups. The open sale of syrups without a doctor's prescription made monitoring difficult, thereby increasing the risk of their misuse.
