In a significant late-night development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a video message addressing the nation on the ongoing NEET paper leak controversy, announcing that a stringent new anti-paper leak Bill will be placed before the Union Cabinet on Friday.
The proposed legislation aims to establish fast-track courts and introduce harsher punishments for those involved in examination malpractices. The announcement comes amid massive, weeks-long student protests at Jantar Mantar and repeated disruptions by the Opposition during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Addressing the distress of millions of students, PM Modi acknowledged the severity of the crisis. "Friends, I am well aware that the issue of paper leaks is not a small matter," the Prime Minister stated in his nearly three-minute video. "It causes immense distress to lakhs of students and their parents. Consequently, numerous measures have been taken over the past two-and-a-half months following these incidents, and the culprits have been apprehended and are currently in jail".
Fast-Track to Justice
While highlighting the arrests made so far, PM Modi emphasized that the government will not rest until a foolproof system is in place. He revealed that he had directed departments to draft a resolution for the immediate establishment of fast-track courts.
"I directed the departments today to establish a fast-track court. The departments presented me with the resolution late at night. This resolution, along with the provision for a fast-track court and harsh punishment, will be discussed in the cabinet tomorrow," PM Modi explained.
Safeguarding the Academic Year
Defending his government's handling of the immediate crisis, the Prime Minister noted that canceling the entire process would have destroyed the academic year for millions.
"Our primary responsibility was to ensure that the students did not lose an academic year," he said, adding that the government used its full capacity to ensure that nearly 22 lakh students could take their exams promptly, with results successfully declared on July 19th.
The Road to Parliament
The government is moving with extreme urgency. According to the Prime Minister, once the Cabinet finalizes the Bill on Friday, it will be prioritized in the legislature. "Since the second week of Parliament is starting from Monday, efforts will be made to get that bill passed in the House as soon as possible," he assured.
While the government hopes this tough legislative push will pacify the unrest, protesting students and opposition leaders continue to maintain their core demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. All eyes are now on the Cabinet's final draft and the upcoming parliamentary debates.
