Dismissal of Political Realignment Rumors
Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar put an end to ongoing political speculation regarding potential realignments or mergers within Maharashtra's political landscape. Addressing reporters during a press conference in Mumbai on September 28, the veteran leader firmly reiterated his party's standalone positioning. Clarifying his stance on rumors circulating about his political future and potential alliances, Pawar stated, "We will not go with anyone. If anyone wants to join us, they are welcome to come with us".
Pawar emphasized that his primary focus remains on strengthening his party’s core organizational structure and grassroots outreach. Reassuring party workers and the public, he dismissed suggestions of his faction merging with rival political entities, stating that there was no question of compromising on the party's independent political identity.
Deadline and Agitation Warning Over Agrarian Crisis
Shifting focus to the agricultural crisis gripping Maharashtra, Sharad Pawar highlighted severe drought conditions affecting farmers across multiple districts. He announced that his party would formally press the state government over the next two to four days to fulfill key relief demands. Stating that the intent is not to seek confrontation unnecessarily, Pawar warned that if the state administration fails to act promptly, the party will take to the streets in a protest agitation.
Pawar outlined critical policy gaps affecting the agricultural sector, specifically pointing to the non-issuance of fresh agricultural loans to farmers classified as defaulters. He also drew attention to inadequate government assistance for banana cultivators and other cash-crop farmers who have suffered heavy losses. Emphasizing the need for public awareness, he urged agricultural organizations and civil society to educate farmers on credit availability, debt relief measures, and crop loss compensation frameworks.
Comprehensive Demands Submitted to the Administration
The press conference follows a charter of 17 key demands submitted by Sharad Pawar to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, calling for immediate intervention in drought-affected areas. Among the major demands, Pawar called for financial assistance of ₹1,00,000 per hectare for crop loss, a complete waiver of land revenue and agricultural electricity bills, and direct cash aid of ₹25,000 for landless agricultural laborers. Additionally, he demanded a waiver of all educational and hostel fees for students residing in drought-hit talukas and requested 25 kg of free foodgrains per family.
To ensure swift local administration, Pawar advocated empowering tehsildars to authorize water tankers directly to tackle drinking water shortages for citizens and livestock. He also requested a special three-day session of the Maharashtra State Legislature to deliberate on the drought situation and ensure relief reaches beneficiaries before major festive periods.
