Authorities on Friday opened multiple gates of the Salal Hydroelectric Power Station on the Chenab River after persistent rainfall in the catchment areas caused a substantial increase in water inflow into the reservoir.

The controlled release of excess water is being undertaken to regulate the reservoir level and ensure the safe operation of the dam. Officials said the measure is a standard safety protocol during periods of heavy inflow to prevent excessive pressure on the reservoir.

Following the opening of the gates, the water level and flow of the Chenab River have risen significantly in downstream areas. Residents living along the riverbanks have been advised to remain alert and avoid venturing close to the river as water discharge continues.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are expected to adjust the release of water depending on rainfall intensity and inflow levels in the coming hours. The administration has urged the public to follow official advisories and cooperate with safety measures to avoid any untoward incidents.
