Russia has proposed developing a railway route to the Indian Ocean and India to reduce dependence on strategically important sea routes.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin said that alternative routes could help reduce the risks associated with two strategic waterways, the Strait of Hormuz and the Bosphorus.

According to Russia's state news agency, Khusnulin said that railway routes through Turkmenistan, Iran and Afghanistan could be explored to reach India.

The proposal comes at a time when maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
