Olympic medallist and World Champion P. V. Sindhu has stepped into global badminton governance after assuming a full voting position on the Council of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), following her election as Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission.

After completing the formal vetting process, Sindhu officially entered the BWF Council at the end of 2025. She made her first appearance before the global badminton membership during the BWF Annual General Meeting in Horsens, marking the beginning of her tenure within the sport’s highest governing body.

The BWF Council plays a central role in guiding the strategic direction and governance of badminton worldwide. As a voting member, Sindhu will participate in key discussions and decisions shaping the future of the sport, bringing the perspectives and experiences of elite athletes into global leadership.

Her appointment is significant as it remains rare for an active athlete competing at the highest level to simultaneously hold a voting position within badminton’s global governance structure. In this role, she will help ensure that players’ voices and priorities are represented at the highest levels of decision-making.

Over the past decade, Sindhu has established herself as one of badminton’s most successful players and a respected global ambassador. Her elevation to the Council reflects the trust placed in her leadership and experience.

Speaking on the occasion, Sindhu said it was an honour to take on the responsibility within the BWF and represent athletes worldwide. She also expressed gratitude to BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul for her encouragement and said she looks forward to working with the Council to grow the sport globally.
