In the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in West Asia, a special meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to review the situation and the measures taken by various ministries. This was the fourth special meeting held on this issue.

During the meeting, the Cabinet Secretary briefed the Committee on the steps taken to ensure availability of petroleum products, LNG, LPG and fertilizers. He said that sources of LPG procurement have been diversified and public sector refineries are operating at more than 100 per cent capacity due to adequate availability of crude oil. Also, progress has been made towards expansion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections and strengthening of the National Gas Grid.

The meeting also reviewed the requirement of fertilizers for the upcoming Rabi season. The Prime Minister directed to ensure uninterrupted supply of fertilizers.

The Prime Minister also reviewed the situation of seafarers on Indian and foreign-flagged ships operating in conflict-affected areas. He directed the setting up of a special mechanism to provide timely information, emergency assistance and counselling to seafarers and their families.

The Prime Minister stated that the security of Indian citizens and the Indian diaspora is the top priority in the times of crisis in West Asia. He also stressed the need to use renewable and non-fossil-fuel based energy sources, including solar energy, to achieve energy self-sufficiency.

The Prime Minister directed to maintain a coordinated approach across the entire government machinery and to set up an integrated system to regularly monitor all developments, so that necessary measures can be implemented quickly to safeguard the interests of the citizens.
