The second phase of the distribution ceremony of the 'Padma Awards', one of the country's most prestigious civilian awards, will be held today.

President Draupadi Murmu will present Padma Awards to various dignitaries at the second civic honours function to be held at 5 pm today. Earlier, the President had presented Padma Awards to 66 dignitaries at the first civic honours function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan last month.

This year, the President has approved a total of 131 Padma Awards; this includes 5 Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri Awards. These awards are announced every year on Republic Day.

These prestigious civilian awards are given for contributions in various fields such as art, social service, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports and civic service. 'Padma Vibhushan' is given for exceptional and distinguished service, 'Padma Bhushan' for outstanding service of the highest order and 'Padma Shri' for outstanding service in any field.
