Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has extended a warm and official invitation to Japanese business leaders, industrial conglomerates, and institutional investors to actively participate in India’s rapidly accelerating economic growth story. Commencing a high-profile, four-day official visit to Japan on August 24, 2026, Minister Goyal is scheduled to travel across key economic, industrial, and technology hubs, including Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka, through August 27. The Union Minister is leading India’s largest-ever business delegation to Japan, comprising over 200 prominent trade representatives, corporate executives, and industry leaders from across the nation. This expansive delegation reflects a broad economic spectrum, encompassing strategic sectors such as advanced semiconductor manufacturing, clean energy transition, steel production, automotive engineering, financial services, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and cutting-edge startup ecosystems.
Addressing a major joint forum of Indian and Japanese business executives and trade representatives in Tokyo, Goyal underscored that India presents an extraordinarily large, stable, and dynamic domestic market for international investors. He affirmed that India is continuously modernizing its regulatory landscape and opening its economy to foster seamless global trade partnerships. The minister highlighted that India’s strategic network of existing and negotiating Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) will ultimately unlock access to approximately 75 percent of total global trade. This comprehensive trade integration framework, he noted, firmly positions India as a resilient, highly competitive, and indispensable partner in global value chains, offering Japanese companies long-term operational certainty and unprecedented market access.
Strategic Industry Engagements and High-Level Executive Dialogues
The initial phase of Minister Goyal's visit in Tokyo featured intensive bilateral interactions with top executives from premier Japanese corporations. A prominent highlight was his bilateral meeting with Shingo Ueno, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sumitomo Corporation. The discussion focused on identifying strategic synergies and expanding Sumitomo's investments in India, specifically across green energy transformation, sustainable urban mobility, and large-scale industrial infrastructure projects.
Furthermore, Goyal engaged in targeted high-level discussions with the executive leadership of Meiji Seika Pharma Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corporation to drive collaborative research, expand active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing, and accelerate infrastructure modernization. The minister's scheduled itinerary in Nagoya and Osaka includes major investment roadshows organized in partnership with Chukeiren (Central Japan Economic Federation) and high-level industrial roundtables with Keidanren (Japan Business Federation). These sessions aim to secure strategic Japanese capital and technology transfers in high-technology areas, including semiconductor fabrication, artificial intelligence, next-generation electronics, and industrial automation.
