Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has initiated legal action against alleged defamatory posts and 'deepfake' content on social media. The Bombay High Court has allowed him to file a civil case against Meta, X, Google and other social media platforms.

It has been alleged on behalf of Gadkari that false and misleading content targeting him and his family was circulated on social media platforms. In these posts, claims were made that Gadkari's family had allegedly benefited from the 'E20' (ethanol-blended petrol) policy.

The Union Minister has termed these allegations as completely baseless. He clarified that the E20 policy comes under the purview of the Petroleum Ministry and its implementation is not related to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

In his petition, Gadkari has accused social media companies of failing to curb objectionable posts and deepfake content. He has sought court directions to remove such content and prevent its circulation in future.

After the permission of the Bombay High Court, Union Ministers will now be able to take legal action against social media platforms.
