The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall warning in parts of Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya over the next two days.

The monsoon has become active in North India and heavy rains have disrupted public life in many parts of the country. Local administrations are on alert for landslides and heavy rains in the hilly states.

The flood situation in Assam has become serious, with 16 districts in the state affected. About 3.5 lakh citizens have been affected by the floods. The Indian Army has launched Operation Jal Rahat to expedite relief and rescue operations in the flood-hit areas. Army units are moving civilians to safety and delivering necessary relief materials.

Meanwhile, a landslide at Samardung in Namchi district of central Sikkim has collapsed part of a hydropower project tunnel. Rescue teams have so far pulled 12 people out safely and eight bodies have been recovered.

At least 25 people were feared trapped in the tunnel. Rescue teams are continuing search and rescue operations and the situation is being closely monitored by the administration.

Meanwhile, the Met Department has issued a vigilance alert to the concerned states against the backdrop of possible heavy rains.
