India has called for safe and unimpeded navigation and the uninterrupted flow of commerce through the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions in West Asia.

At a press briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the security of the strategic waterway is crucial for global economic and energy security.

Jaiswal said India had issued a statement following the summoning of the Deputy Chief of Mission of Iran and had conveyed its strong concerns and condemnation to the Iranian side over the attacks that resulted in the death of an Indian national and injuries to several others.

He stressed the need for immediate de-escalation and urged both the United States and Iran to return to the negotiating table and pursue dialogue and diplomacy to ensure peace and stability in the region.
