Through the 'Mann Ki Baat' programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to everyone to strengthen the spirit of 'Vocal for Local' (preferring local products) on the occasion of 'National Handloom Day' to be celebrated on 7th August.

Prime Minister Modi today mentioned the encouragement being given to the handloom sector across the country: some are taking forward the beautiful tradition of 'Pochampalli Ikat', some are involving women weavers in making woolen items, and some are preserving the traditional art of 'Kasavu' of Kerala. These initiatives are also providing employment to our mothers and sisters.

Prime Minister Modi made a special mention of Khadi and spoke about Mahatma Gandhi's fondness for it. He said that the popularity of Khadi has increased tremendously in recent times, with its sales increasing six-fold in the last 12 years; now the sales have reached nearly Rs 8,000 crore.

He appealed to everyone to buy at least one item made from Khadi, handloom or handicrafts during the upcoming festivals.

Additionally, Prime Minister Modi spoke about the country's traditional musical instruments and stressed the need to promote folk music. He paid tributes to Bharat Ratna Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, whose death anniversary falls on July 27. The Prime Minister also spoke about the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, organised on Independence Day on August 15, and described it as an initiative that connects the entire country with a wonderful spirit.
