In a major consumer safety and public health enforcement drive across Maharashtra, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has imposed an immediate complete ban on the sale of loose edible oil throughout the state starting August 21, 2026. Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe announced the comprehensive regulatory measure, emphasizing that selling unpackaged or loose edible oil poses severe health risks due to rampant adulteration, unsafe storage conditions, and lack of mandatory labeling details. The enforcement drive aims to ensure that consumers across urban and rural regions receive only standardized, hygienic, and properly labeled packaged edible oil.
Highlighting the empirical data behind the policy intervention, Commissioner Mundhe revealed that during the previous year's quality control drives, the department collected approximately 1,247 samples of edible oil from various distributors and retailers statewide. Out of the total tested batches, while 1,142 samples met the prescribed quality standards, 77 samples were categorized as substandard, 13 were declared completely unsafe for human consumption, and 15 samples carried misleading or improper labeling. Citing these safety findings, the administration intensified its vigilance, identifying the ban on loose oil sales as a pivotal step toward eradicating adulteration in the food supply chain.
Strict Legal Penalties, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Protocols
To guarantee strict compliance with the new regulations, the FDA has alerted all regional officers and municipal inspectors to conduct surprise inspections at wholesale and retail markets. Manufacturers, wholesalers, and shopkeepers found distributing or selling loose edible oil will face rigorous legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act. Penalties for non-compliance include imprisonment alongside financial fines scaling up to 10 lakh rupees depending on the severity of the violation.
Commissioner Mundhe urged citizens to refrain from purchasing unbranded or unpackaged edible oil and to report illegal sales to local FDA offices. By enforcing mandatory sealed packaging, the government aims to eliminate food adulteration, safeguard public health, and create a transparent, quality-driven retail framework across Maharashtra.
