The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has conducted simultaneous raids on several prominent private hospitals in Kerala in connection with a case involving alleged illegal organ transplants and associated money laundering. This action is part of an ongoing investigation following the exposure of an organ trafficking racket in Kochi last month. According to sources, the ED's Kochi zonal team initiated the raids early in the morning. The investigation primarily focuses on money and assets allegedly amassed through illegal organ transplant activities.

The case centers on the prime accused, Mohammed Najeeb Kallatra, a resident of Kasaragod. Investigative agencies suspect that staff members at certain hospitals assisted the accused in this network, thereby facilitating illegal transplant procedures. During the raids, multiple multi-specialty hospitals across the Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Kottayam districts were brought under the scope of the investigation. Officials have begun a thorough examination of transplant records, medical documents, and related files.

This action follows a preliminary investigation by the Kerala Police. The police probe had uncovered an organ trafficking network that targeted the poor and economically vulnerable sections of society for illegal organ transplants. The ED is now working to establish links regarding the 'proceeds of crime'—specifically, the sources of the illicit earnings and how those funds were utilized.
