Indian Navy launches indigenous ASW craft Machilipatnam

The Indian Navy launched Machilipatnam (BY 529), the seventh of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) being built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). The ship was launched by Goolrukh Anand in the presence of Vice Admiral Atul Anand, Additional Secretary, Department of Military Affairs.

Senior officials of the Indian Navy, Cochin Shipyard Limited, and other dignitaries attended the ceremony.

The ship is named after the historic port city of Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh, reflecting its rich maritime heritage and India's naval tradition.

Machilipatnam is equipped for underwater surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, low-intensity maritime operations (LIMO) and mine warfare. It will strengthen coastal defence and improve maritime domain awareness.

The launch marks another milestone in the ASW SWC project and highlights India's commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing.

With more than 80% indigenous content, the project showcases the growing strength of India's shipbuilding industry and will enhance the Indian Navy's operational readiness in the Indian Ocean Region.
