India has strongly condemned Pakistan's decision to hold general elections for the so-called Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly in Indian territory that has been illegally and forcibly occupied by Pakistan. These elections are taking place today.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, it has been reiterated that the Gilgit and Baltistan regions—part of the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh—are integral parts of India. Consequently, India has made it clear that Pakistan has no locus standi regarding these regions.

India stated that such attempts by Pakistan cannot alter the ground reality. Furthermore, India noted that such elections cannot mask serious issues—such as human rights violations, political suppression, economic exploitation, and restrictions on the fundamental freedoms of citizens—prevalent in the territories under Pakistan's illegal occupation.

India has once again called upon Pakistan to immediately vacate the Indian territories under its illegal occupation.
