France wildfires burn 42,000 hectares across Gironde

Firefighters faced another day battling massive blazes scorching forests across France, with a forecast of another heatwave in southwest France threatening to deepen the crisis.

The wildfires advanced towards the outskirts of the historic city of Bordeaux on Sunday, threatening homes and farmland. The wildfires have forced the evacuation of about 2.2 lakh people. The blazes have devastated the Cap Ferret peninsula and continue to spread, with firefighters working to prevent them from reaching Bordeaux.

Meanwhile, in Le Porge, police patrolled homes after most residents fled the wildfires. More than 150 homes were destroyed by the wildfire that swept through Le Porge.

Police checked every house in the town to ensure all residents had evacuated and to prevent break-ins. The blazes have burned around 42,000 hectares across the Gironde region.

French President Emmanuel Macron attended an interministerial meeting on the response to the wildfires in France.
