The 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) was celebrated with enthusiasm across India and around the world on Sunday under the theme "Yoga for Healthy Ageing." Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw participated in yoga sessions held in different parts of the country, highlighting the importance of yoga in promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the national observance from Kolkata's historic Red Road, where he performed the Common Yoga Protocol along with thousands of participants. Addressing the gathering, he said Yoga has become a global movement connecting people across cultures and nations. Emphasising this year's theme, he noted that Yoga helps people remain healthy, active and energetic throughout their lives while promoting physical fitness, mental balance and emotional strength.

The Prime Minister urged citizens to make Yoga a part of their daily routine and highlighted the success of the "Yoga 365" initiative and the 100-day online Yoga programme, which attracted participation from more than 30 lakh people across 130 countries. He also recalled the contributions of spiritual leaders such as Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo in spreading the message of Yoga worldwide.

President Droupadi Murmu participated in the International Yoga Day celebrations at the historic Garrison Ground in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. Governor Mangubhai Patel and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also joined the yoga session.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah performed Yoga in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, alongside Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other participants. The event highlighted Yoga's role in ensuring a healthier and more balanced lifestyle for people of all age groups.

In Rajasthan, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw joined International Yoga Day celebrations in Bikaner. He performed Yoga with participants and encouraged citizens to adopt the practice regularly for better health and wellness.

International Yoga Day 2026 also witnessed extensive global participation, with Indian missions organising Yoga events at nearly 2,500 locations worldwide. In addition, the Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Survey of India organised special Yoga sessions at 100 iconic heritage sites across the country, celebrating the connection between India's cultural heritage and the ancient practice of Yoga.

The large-scale participation across India and around the world reflected Yoga's growing popularity as a global movement for health, harmony and holistic well-being.
