A relentless heatwave continues to sweep across Europe, with record-breaking temperatures spreading east and placing growing pressure on power grids, emergency services and public health systems.

New temperature records were set in Slovakia and Hungary, while Ukraine imposed emergency power cuts as extreme heat strained its war-damaged energy network. Temperatures also climbed to around 30 degrees Celsius in parts of Russia.

Firefighters battled heat-fueled wildfires across the Balkans, as authorities urged residents to stay indoors and conserve electricity.

The United Nations says more than 1,300 excess deaths have been linked to the prolonged heatwave, with scientists warning that climate change is making such extreme weather increasingly frequent and intense.
