Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from the Union Cabinet on Saturday, July 25, amid nationwide student protests and political controversy surrounding the NEET-UG 2026 examination.

In a public statement detailing his decision, Pradhan stated he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He cited the need to protect the larger interests of students and to ensure that the country's youth do not become "trapped in a web of confusion."

He also added that his decision was driven by the necessity to prevent "anti-national forces" from exploiting the ongoing youth protests centered at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

While stepping down, Pradhan defended the government's response to the examination irregularities. He noted that after discrepancies were found in the May 3 examination, the Centre immediately handed the investigation over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), canceled the original test, and successfully organized a re-examination. "From the very first day, I took responsibility for the situation and never turned away from it," he wrote, adding that he remained committed to ensuring the prospects of meritorious students were not harmed.

Pradhan's resignation meets the primary demand of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and other student organizations that have been demonstrating at Jantar Mantar. The announcement came just hours before a scheduled third round of discussions between CJP representatives and the central government.

The government recently introduced a slew of actions to address the protests, including strengthening the anti-paper leak law and terminating 47 officials in the National Testing Agency (NTA). Attention now shifts to the government's next steps and how the protesting student bodies will respond to the minister's resignation.
