A routine vehicular check escalated into a violent confrontation in northwest Delhi’s Mukundpur area, leaving three Delhi Police personnel severely injured. On Saturday, August 22, a mob, including the owner of an impounded motorcycle, allegedly threw chilli powder into the eyes of the police officers and relentlessly assaulted them with bricks and wooden sticks. The shocking incident, which unfolded in broad daylight in the Janta Vihar neighborhood under the jurisdiction of the Bhalswa Dairy police station, highlights the persistent challenges law enforcement officers face during field deployment. Authorities have apprehended a 17-year-old juvenile involved in the attack, while a massive manhunt is currently underway to nab the primary accused—a known history-sheeter with a vast criminal record.
Escalation Over Routine Traffic Enforcement
The series of events began at approximately 3:00 PM when beat staff from the Bhalswa Dairy police station, identified as Head Constable Dinesh and Head Constable Rajesh, were conducting routine preventive patrolling in the Janta Vihar area of Mukundpur. During a standard security check, the officers intercepted a motorcycle. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the rider could not produce valid registration or ownership documents for the vehicle. Adhering to the standard operating procedures, the officers impounded the motorcycle and brought it back to the police station for official deposition under Section 66 of the Delhi Police (DP) Act, which empowers police to detain properties suspected of being stolen or found under suspicious circumstances.
The Violent Assault and Backup Response
The situation took a drastic turn at around 3:30 PM when Head Constables Dinesh and Rajesh returned to their designated beat area to resume their patrolling duties. According to senior police officials, they were suddenly ambushed by a hostile group comprising the owner of the impounded motorcycle and several of his family members. The confrontation initially began as a heated verbal argument over the police action but rapidly deteriorated into an organized physical assault.
Eyewitness accounts and police reports indicate that the mob deliberately targeted the officers' vision by throwing copious amounts of chilli powder into their eyes, rendering them temporarily blinded and defenseless. Taking advantage of this, the assailants began mercilessly beating the officers with bricks and heavy wooden sticks. Hearing the commotion and distress calls, another beat officer, Head Constable Tinu, rushed to the spot to assist his colleagues. However, the aggressive mob turned their ire towards him as well, subjecting him to the same brutal treatment.
The unprovoked violence left all three police personnel with significant injuries. Head Constable Dinesh, in particular, sustained a severe head injury from the brick-batting. A backup team soon arrived, dispersed the violent crowd, and rushed the injured officers to a nearby medical facility. Following emergency medical treatment, doctors have declared all three officers to be in a stable condition.
Suspect Profiles and Ongoing Investigation
Acting swiftly, local police, aided by cooperative neighborhood residents, managed to apprehend one of the attackers at the scene—a 17-year-old juvenile in conflict with the law (JCL). However, the remaining adult suspects managed to flee before additional forces secured the perimeter.
The primary absconding accused has been identified by authorities as Sunil, alias Pankaj. According to Delhi Police records, Sunil is a designated "Bad Character" (BC) of the area, a term used for habitual offenders. He possesses a deeply entrenched criminal history, with at least five previous involvements in serious cases, including two registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, alongside other heinous offenses.
