External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has expressed concern over the powerful earthquake that struck Kumamoto region in southwestern Japan yesterday. In a post on social media, Dr. Jaishankar expressed India's support and condolences to the people and government of the region. He also prayed for the safety and speedy recovery of all those affected by the earthquake.

A powerful earthquake struck the Kumamoto region in southwestern Japan yesterday. The death toll has risen to 13. Thousands of people sheltering in shelters are facing difficulties such as power outages, transportation disruptions and intense heat as relief efforts continue. Damage is currently being assessed. The Kyushu Shinkansen bullet train and some airports remain closed. Military personnel and emergency relief teams are involved in rescue operations. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said rescue operations are underway in the affected areas. More than 36,900 homes have lost power and communications have also been disrupted in some areas.
