The government has revised the 'windfall tax' (special additional excise duty) levied on the export of petrol and diesel. The new rates have come into effect from today, August 3. The decision has been taken after reviewing the international crude oil and fuel prices.

However, there has been no change in the central excise duty on petrol and diesel for domestic consumers. The government has increased the windfall tax on exports of petrol and diesel.

As per the new rates, effective from August 3, the export duty on petrol has been increased from Rs 2.5 to Rs 3.5 per litre and on diesel from Rs 15.5 to Rs 24 per litre. The decision has been taken as part of the government's regular fortnightly review of global crude oil and refined fuel prices.

This change will primarily affect refining companies that export fuel. Currently, there is no change in the central excise duty on petrol and diesel sold in the domestic market.
