The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has introduced significant amendments to the Drugs Rules, 1945, to curb the misuse of cough syrups.

Under this amendment, the previous exemption allowing the sale of cough syrups in small villages has been revoked. Additionally, the word "syrup" has been removed from the list of medicines covered under Schedule K.

As a result of this change, the sale of cough medicines will now be mandatory only through authorized, licensed pharmacies in compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and relevant regulations.

Previously, the retail sale of cough syrups was permitted without certain conditions in villages with a population of less than 1,000. However, this exemption has now been completely withdrawn.

It has also been clarified that cough syrups cannot be purchased without a doctor's prescription, and any violation of these rules will result in the cancellation of the pharmacy's license.
