An important decision has been taken in the area of all medium schools in the state for the health of students. The Food and Drug Administration has banned the sale of packaged food and beverages containing excess sugar, salt and fat within 50 meters of schools.

This decision will be strictly implemented, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe told reporters in Mumbai yesterday.

This decision has been taken to curb various health problems including increasing obesity among students. Foods and drinks containing high amounts of sugar, salt and fat can adversely affect the health of students. Therefore, he explained that the administration is focusing on reducing the availability of such foods in school premises.

According to the Food Safety and Standards Rules, it is mandatory for every school kitchen operator, as well as vendors and organizations supplying food to schools, to have the necessary licenses. Commissioner Mundhe also said that it is necessary for those concerned to follow the food safety rules.

The Food and Drug Administration will conduct regular inspections of food sold in school premises to ensure that rules related to quality, safety and health of students are being followed. The administration has clarified that action will be taken against those who violate the rules as per the rules.
