The Himanta Biswa Sarma government in Assam has taken a significant step against illegal migrants. Chief Minister Himanta announced that the Cabinet has decided not to issue Aadhaar cards to individuals above the age of 18 to prevent illegal migrants from obtaining them. Himanta Biswa Sarma shared this information after presiding over a Cabinet meeting. He stated that in exceptional cases, the District Commissioner would need to submit a proposal to the state government seeking permission to issue an Aadhaar card. The Chief Minister explained that the government would subsequently decide whether the applicant is eligible for an Aadhaar card. However, the issuance of Aadhaar cards will continue for the tea garden community and Scheduled Tribes, as many individuals within these groups have not yet received their cards.
