President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will significantly reduce its military presence in Germany. This move has further exacerbated the dispute between the U.S. and Germany, particularly with Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Mr. Trump appears to be attempting to scale back America's commitment to European security. The Pentagon had previously announced on Friday that it would withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany. When asked on Saturday about the reasons behind this decision, Trump offered no specific explanation; instead, he indicated that even larger-scale reductions were yet to come.

Earlier, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius had expressed the view that the planned reduction of U.S. troops in Germany should serve as a fresh impetus for Europe to strengthen its own defense capabilities. The presence of the U.S. military in Germany dates back to the post-World War II era and reached its peak during the Cold War period of the 1960s.

The deployment of U.S. troops in Germany constitutes America's largest military presence in Europe. Currently, approximately 36,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Germany, while roughly 12,000 are deployed in Italy and 10,000 in the United Kingdom.
