Advocates write to CJI over protest near PM residence

Hundreds of advocates from different States across India have submitted a representation to the Chief Justice of India regarding the events of July 21 alleging that Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Akhilesh Yadav and several other Members of Parliament gathered outside the Prime Minister's residence without prior permission or authorisation.

The representation contends that the demonstration took place in a high-security and highly sensitive zone, raising concerns relating to security, public order, and adherence to the rule of law.

It requests the Supreme Court to take appropriate cognizance of the matter, examine whether the incident warrants judicial intervention, and consider issuing comprehensive guidelines to prevent any unlawful assemblies or unauthorized demonstrations in high-security protected areas in the future.

The advocates have emphasized that while the right to peaceful protest is a constitutional right, it must always be exercised within the framework of the Constitution and the law, particularly in locations where national security and the safety of constitutional authorities are involved.
