A 7.1 magnitude earthquake has struck the Kumamoto region on the island of Kyushu in southern Japan. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake originated at a depth of about 10 kilometers under the seabed.

A tsunami warning was issued as a precautionary measure after the earthquake; however, there have been no reports of major damage or loss of life so far.

The earthquake, which struck at 4:29 p.m. local time, was centered in the western part of Kumamoto; this area is about 900 kilometers southwest of Tokyo.

Meanwhile, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has clarified that there is no tsunami threat to areas beyond the local coastline. The administration is continuously monitoring the situation.
