A criminal investigation has been launched in the Hinganghat taluka of Wardha district, Maharashtra, following the discovery of a 42-year-old man's body in a village well. The victim, identified as Santosh Pandurang Kaikade, was allegedly murdered by his wife, her paramour, and two accomplices. The incident, which took place in Shekapur (Bai) village under the jurisdiction of the Vadner Police Station, was reportedly motivated by the victim's discovery of his wife's extramarital affair. Police have successfully apprehended all four suspects involved in the case.
The Motive and the Night of the Incident
Police investigations reveal that the core motive behind the homicide was an ongoing illicit relationship between the primary accused, Sapna Santosh Kaikade (36), and Shubham Rameshrao Kaikade (30). Shubham is a relative (cousin brother-in-law) of the deceased.
The sequence of events escalated on the night of August 16. The victim, Santosh, returned home after attending a local religious gathering (bhajan) and reportedly found his wife and Shubham in a compromising position. Faced with the immediate exposure of their affair, the accused, with the premeditated intent of removing Santosh from their path, decided to eliminate him. Aided by two of Shubham's associates—Sachin Prabhakar Basune and Prashant Ramesh Karpe—the perpetrators overpowered Santosh and strangled him to death.
Attempted Cover-up and the Discovery
Following the murder, the accused formulated a plan to destroy the evidence and mislead the authorities. The four individuals transported the victim's body in the dark and dumped it into a well located in an agricultural field owned by a local resident, Bobade, situated on the outskirts of the village.
For three days, Santosh was considered missing. The prolonged absence of the victim raised suspicions among the local villagers, who began to question Sapna about her husband's whereabouts. Under mounting pressure from the community on Tuesday, August 18, Sapna broke down and informed the villagers that Santosh's body was in the well. The villagers immediately alerted the local police authorities, who retrieved the body and sent it for a post-mortem examination.
Official Police Action and Legal Proceedings
Upon recovering the body and conducting preliminary inquiries, the Vadner Police registered a formal First Information Report (FIR No. 323/2026). The complaint was officially lodged by Devanand Pandurangji Kaikade, the brother of the deceased.
Law enforcement officers moved swiftly to detain the four accused: Sapna Kaikade, Shubham Kaikade, Sachin Basune, and Prashant Karpe. They have been booked under the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), specifically under Sections 103(1) (punishment for murder) and 3(5) (joint criminal liability). The arrests were executed under the supervision of Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sushil Kumar Nayak, Probationary SDPO Govind Gavali, Police Inspector Ghanshyam Patil, and Police Sub-Inspector Bharat Verma. The police are currently collecting forensic evidence from the crime scene and the well to strengthen the prosecution's case before presenting the accused in the magistrate's court for custody.
