On June 30, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Donald Trump's attempt to restrict birthright citizenship in the United States, preserving the 150-year-old policy.

In a 6-3 decision, Chief Justice John Roberts ruled that children born in the U.S. to parents unlawfully or temporarily present are 'citizens at birth' under the 14th Amendment.

The Justice upheld a lower court's decision that blocked President Trump's executive order directing U.S. agencies not to recognize the citizenship of children born in the United States, if neither parent is an American citizen or legal permanent resident.

President Trump had issued the order last year on his first day back in office as part of a suite of policies to crack down on legal and illegal immigration.
