The Civil Services Main Examination 2026, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), officially commenced today, August 21, 2026, across designated examination centers in major cities nationwide. Widely recognized as one of India's most prestigious and rigorous competitive examinations, the mains stage evaluates candidates through detailed descriptive papers testing analytical ability, depth of knowledge, and conceptual clarity. A total of 13,343 candidates who successfully cleared the Preliminary Examination earlier this year have qualified to appear for the mains examination. The multi-day testing schedule is slated to take place on August 21, 22, 23, 29, and 30, structured systematically to allow candidates sufficient mental preparation between core compulsory and optional subject papers.
To maintain administrative efficiency, the UPSC has scheduled the examination in two distinct daily shifts. The morning shift operates from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, while the afternoon shift runs from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Candidates are required to report to their respective examination venues at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time of each session, as entry gates close strictly 10 minutes before commencement. Applicants must carry a printed copy of their e-Admit Card, an official government-issued photo identification proof, and a recent passport-size photograph for each paper to ensure smooth identity verification processes.
Strict Examination Guidelines and Evaluation Roadmap
In line with stringent anti-cheating protocols, the Commission has strictly prohibited all electronic devices, including mobile phones, smartwatches, Bluetooth devices, and programmable calculators, inside the examination premises. Invigilators and security personnel at all centers have been instructed to enforce multi-tiered frisking and biometric attendance logging.
The Civil Services Examination serves as the gateway to premier administrative services, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and various Group 'A' and Group 'B' central civil services. Candidates who secure marks above the qualifying cutoff in the written main examination will be shortlisted for the final Personality Test (Interview) round, where their suitability for public governance will be evaluated by an expert UPSC interview board.
