The Union Home Ministry has approved the establishment of a new special court in Maharashtra for criminal cases being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The Union Home Ministry has taken this decision after consulting the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and the state government.

According to the notification issued, Room No. 26 in the Mumbai City Civil and Sessions Court has been designated as a special court for hearing cases related to the NIA.

The National Investigation Agency Act provides for special courts for speedy and effective trial of serious cases related to terrorism, organised crime and national security. This step is considered important in view of the increasing number of cases pending before the NIA in Maharashtra and their timely disposal.

This special court will provide an independent system for hearing cases filed by the NIA, and will help make the judicial process easier and faster.
