A heartbreaking incident highlighting rural infrastructural neglect unfolded in Gadhbar village of Agra district’s Bah sub-division, where an unborn child died inside the womb after an emergency ambulance remained trapped in a deep, rain-damaged pothole for more than two hours during a medical emergency.

The incident occurred during the early hours of September 3, 2026, when 25-year-old Nidhi, wife of Pravendra Singh, went into active labour around 1:00 AM. Her family promptly contacted the emergency medical services, and an ambulance reached the village shortly afterwards. However, their race to the hospital was abruptly interrupted when the vehicle’s wheels plunged deep into a massive water-filled crater on the village link road connecting Gadhbar to the main highway, rendering the ambulance completely immobile.

Two-Hour Ordeal and Emergency Intervention

The ambulance driver attempted multiple maneuvers to free the vehicle, but the wheels spun helplessly in the deep mud and silt. Frantic relatives and local villagers rallied to summon a local tractor to pull the heavy emergency vehicle out of the trench, an effort that took nearly two critical hours.

* Critical Delay: The ambulance finally arrived at the nearest Community Health Centre (CHC) around 3:30 AM. * Infant Pronounced Dead: Medical officers examining Nidhi confirmed that the baby had already passed away in the womb due to severe obstetric distress exacerbated by the prolonged transit delay. * Mother Under Treatment: Attending doctors conducted emergency surgical procedures to stabilize the mother, who survived the ordeal.

Public Outcry Over Ignored Warnings

Local residents voiced outrage, alleging that the link road had been constructed and repaired by the Public Works Department (PWD) barely six months prior. Heavy monsoon rains and soil erosion had washed away a major section nearly a month ago, creating severe hazards. Villagers stated that repeated pleas and complaints submitted to the local PWD engineers regarding the dangerous crater went completely unheeded.

The community raised the issue at the Tehsil Diwas (Sampoorna Samadhan Diwas) in Bah, demanding strict accountability for administrative lapses and the construction of an all-weather cement concrete road. Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vinod Kumar confirmed that the administration has instructed PWD officials to complete road restoration on priority and ordered an official inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
