A fierce political and environmental debate has taken over Indian social media following a viral campaign spearheaded by the Indian National Congress (INC). Triggered by a series of widely shared tweets and satirical videos—including the viral "Ethanol Paglu" reel—the controversy centers on the government's aggressive push for E20 (20% ethanol-blended) petrol.

While the government champions the blending program as a milestone for energy independence and cleaner fuel, the Congress party has weaponized social media to allege massive conflicts of interest and widespread consumer vehicle damage.

The Viral Spark and Core Allegations

The controversy reached a boiling point on the platform X (formerly Twitter) when the official @INCIndia handle pushed videos mocking the government's ethanol policy. The viral posts amplified severe allegations made by Congress Media Chairman Pawan Khera, who accused Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari of "aggressively lobbying" for ethanol blending to benefit his own family.

According to the Congress party's viral claims:

Conflict of Interest: Congress alleges that companies deeply involved in ethanol production—such as Cian Agro Industries and Manas Agro Industries—are directly tied to Gadkari's sons, Nikhil and Sarang Gadkari.

Massive Financial Gains: The viral posts highlight that Cian Agro's revenue allegedly jumped from ₹18 crore to ₹523 crore in just a year, with its stock price surging over 2,100% in 2025 alone.

The Environmental Toll: Congress claims that while ethanol is touted as "green," each liter of the biofuel requires a staggering 3,000 liters of water to produce, putting immense strain on agricultural resources.

Consumer Panic: Does E20 Ruin Engines?

Beyond the political accusations, the viral INC videos have tapped into growing consumer anxiety regarding the safety of E20 fuel. Social media is currently flooded with unverified videos claiming that ethanol-blended petrol reduces fuel efficiency (mileage), causes premature engine breakdowns, and even attracts ants to vehicle fuel caps due to residual sugars from sugarcane.

"The common man is left paying more—vehicles guzzle more fuel, break down sooner, and citizens' worries about engine life and maintenance are dismissed," the Congress stated during the campaign rollout.
