The 'Teacher Eligibility Test' (TET), conducted to determine the eligibility of candidates for teaching positions in government, aided, and private schools across Tamil Nadu, is taking place over two days—today (the 4th) and tomorrow (the 5th).

Lakhs of candidates from across the state are participating in this examination. Today, marking the first day of the exam, 'Paper-1' is being conducted for 'Secondary Grade Teachers'. Tomorrow, 'Paper-2' will be held for 'Graduate Teachers'. A total of 5,884 candidates have registered for 'Paper-1' and 'Paper-2' in the Nellai district.

Today, 1,749 candidates appeared for the 'Paper-1' exam for 'Secondary Grade Teacher' posts in the district. Examination centers have been set up at seven major schools in the Palayamkottai area; these include Sarah Tucker Higher Secondary School, St. Xavier's Higher Secondary School, Ignatius Convent, Christ Raja Higher Secondary School, Infant Jesus Higher Secondary School, St. John's Higher Secondary School, and Mary Sargent Higher Secondary School.

Candidates began gathering at the exam centers early in the morning; entry was granted only to those possessing a government identity card and a hall ticket. Police security has also been deployed at the exam centers. Tomorrow (Sunday, the 5th), 4,135 candidates will appear for the 'Paper-2' exam for 'Graduate Teachers' in the Nellai district. A total of 15 exam centers have been prepared across the district for this purpose.

Strict monitoring measures have been implemented to prevent any malpractice at the exam centers. A Chief Supervisor has been appointed for each center. Candidates are prohibited from carrying mobile phones, calculators, or any other electronic devices into the examination hall. They have been advised to reach the examination center one hour before the exam begins.

Under the 'Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2010' (RTE Act), passing the Teacher Eligibility Test is mandatory for appointment as a teacher in schools or for retaining one's position. Notably, the certificate awarded to successful candidates is now valid for a lifetime.

The Transport Department has arranged additional bus services for the convenience of candidates traveling to the examination centers. The district administration has ensured that adequate drinking water and proper basic amenities are available at the respective schools.
