he Supreme Court on Tuesday directed that the status quo be maintained in the matter relating to the Karnataka High Court's order directing an increase in ethanol allocation for the Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2025-26. As a result, the existing ethanol procurement quota for 2025-26 will remain unchanged for the time being.

The interim order was passed while hearing petitions filed by the Central Government and oil marketing companies. They have challenged the Karnataka High Court's directive asking authorities to consider an ethanol manufacturer's request for additional ethanol procurement.

The Central Government has been promoting Dedicated Ethanol Plants (DEP) to boost ethanol production. These plants have long-term procurement agreements with oil marketing companies. However, the DEP operators have alleged that they are not being given the prescribed priority in additional ethanol procurement.

During the hearing, the Central Government told the Supreme Court that there is no conclusive scientific evidence so far to show that the use of E20 petrol causes damage to vehicles. According to the government, the ethanol blending policy will strengthen the country's energy security, increase farmers' income, and provide environmental benefits.
