Priyanka Gandhi Opens Kingsway Camp Gate as Detained Opposition Leaders Held in Delhi

NEW DELHI — High drama unfolded outside the New Police Line facility at Kingsway Camp in North Delhi on Tuesday night, October 6, 2026, when Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra climbed over and opened the premises' locked entrance gate. The facility was being used by Delhi Police to detain Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and approximately 250 senior leaders and parliamentarians from the INDIA bloc following an opposition protest in central Delhi.

Visuals recorded at the scene showed Priyanka Gandhi Vadra scaling the metal gate structure, reaching over to unlatch the locking mechanism, and pushing the heavy gates open from the inside. Immediately after the gate was unlatched, scores of Congress party workers, supporters, and media personnel pushed past police cordons and entered the grounds of the police station complex, shouting slogans against the government and law enforcement authorities.

High-Voltage Standoff Follows Eight-Hour Sit-In at Akashvani Bhawan

The escalation at Kingsway Camp was the culmination of an all-day confrontation between opposition lawmakers and Delhi Police. Earlier in the day, a protest march led by Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge, Akhilesh Yadav, Abhishek Banerjee, Derek O'Brien, and other senior leaders departed from the Parliament House complex toward the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters on Parliament Street.

When police erected multi-layered barricades near NITI Aayog and Akashvani Bhawan to prevent the marchers from reaching the poll panel's office, opposition leaders sat on a dharna on the road. The protest subsequently moved into the lawns and tree-shaded courtyard of Akashvani Bhawan, where leaders remained staged in an impromptu sit-in for nearly eight to nine hours.

Around 8:00 PM, after issuing multiple dispersal notices, heavy police forces and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel moved in to clear the Akashvani Bhawan premises. Security forces detained over 250 opposition figures, placing them onto police buses that transported them across the city to the New Police Line at Kingsway Camp in North Delhi.

Opposition Demands CEC Resignation Over Electoral Roll Revision Allegations

The daylong agitation was organized by the opposition INDIA alliance to demand the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition parties have alleged significant irregularities, voter deletion, and procedural flaws in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls currently underway across several states.

During the sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi addressed reporters, stating that the opposition's actions were aimed at protecting democratic norms and voter integrity. He accused the election management authorities of failing to maintain neutrality. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra told reporters that opposition representatives had sought a formal meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner to submit a detailed representation regarding their grievances, but were blocked by police deployments.

Political Reactions and Eventual Release of Detained Leaders

The incident triggered sharp reactions across the political spectrum. Addressing a news conference in New Delhi, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi condemned the opposition's actions at Kingsway Camp, describing the forcing open of police gates as an "attempted intrusion." Trivedi stated that opposition parties were resorting to unconstitutional tactics and repeatedly questioning national institutions due to an inability to accept democratic electoral outcomes over the past 12 years.
