President Droupadi Murmu today conferred Padma Awards upon 66 distinguished individuals—including three achievers from Rajasthan—during the first civil investiture ceremony of this year. Of these, two individuals were honored with the 'Padma Vibhushan,' six with the 'Padma Bhushan,' and 58 with the 'Padma Shri' awards. For his contributions to the field of arts, renowned film actor Dharmendra Singh Deol was posthumously conferred the 'Padma Vibhushan' award. A legendary figure in Indian violin music, Ustad Dr. N. Rajam, was also honored with the 'Padma Vibhushan' award. Prominent among those honored with the 'Padma Shri' award were the state's Bhapang player Gaffaruddin Mewati, social worker Swami Brahmadev Maharaj, and Algoja player Tagaram Bhil. Bhil received this honor for his remarkable work in the field of arts. Notably, Tagaram—who was born on April 17, 1960, in Mulsagar village of Jaisalmer district—began learning to play the Algoja from his father at the age of seven, while he was still herding cattle. Tagaram underwent advanced training in this art form under the guidance of Ustad Akbar Khan. He has showcased his artistic talents at various events, such as the 'Desert Festival' and the 'Jaisalmer Camel Festival.' He has also mesmerized audiences by performing his art at programs organized in various countries on behalf of the Department of Tourism. Tagaram Bhil has been felicitated by various organizations, including the Rajasthan Tourism Department (Jaisalmer). Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with several Union Ministers and dignitaries, were present at this ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. It is pertinent to note that the President has approved the conferment of 131 Padma Awards for the year 2026. This includes five 'Padma Vibhushan', 13 'Padma Bhushan', and 113 'Padma Shri' awards. The remaining Padma awardees will be honored during the second session of the investiture ceremonies, to be held at a later stage.
