An unusual and tense confrontation unfolded on Thursday, September 10, 2026, in Hardauli village under the jurisdiction of the Bindki police station in Fatehpur district, Uttar Pradesh. Local residents, frustrated over persistent network disruptions, held a private telecom maintenance technician captive and tied him to the base of the local mobile transmission tower using ropes. A video of the captive employee, surrounded by agitated villagers demanding the physical presence of senior telecom executives, circulated widely across digital media platforms.
According to local reports, the telecom tower was erected in the village approximately two years ago, raising expectations among residents for uninterrupted voice calling and high-speed data connectivity. However, villagers stated that severe signal dropouts continued unabated, crippling routine digital payments, disrupting online education for students, and rendering regular communication difficult despite recurring service recharges. Multiple formal grievances lodged with customer service channels reportedly yielded no operational improvements.
The Confrontation and On-Site Detention
The escalation occurred when the maintenance technician arrived at the village site to inspect electrical and operational parameters of the facility:
* Confrontation by Villagers: Upon spotting the technician at the transmission premises, a large group of villagers gathered, questioning him over unaddressed service complaints and sluggish data bandwidth.
* Tying to the Tower Structure: Amid heated exchanges, members of the crowd secured the employee with ropes against the iron framework of the tower, asserting that he would not be released until senior regional management personnel arrived on-site to provide a binding timeline for network restoration.
* Emergency Intervention by Police: Upon receiving emergency alerts via the 112 helpline, a police team from the Bindki police station arrived at the location, pacified the crowd, and safely untied the technician.
Legal Action and Administrative Stand
Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhimanyu Manglik confirmed that law enforcement intervened promptly upon learning of the incident. Based on a formal complaint submitted by the technician, identified as Adityabhan Singh, an FIR was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 127(2) regarding wrongful confinement, at the Bindki police station. Police officials emphasized that while citizens possess the right to seek consumer grievance redressal, taking the law into their own hands and holding personnel hostage constitutes a serious criminal offense.
